What is Sustainable architecture and Sustainable Interior Design:

Rapid urbanization and industrialization, have given rise to a new design paradigm called sustainable architecture and sustainable design.

Sustainable architecture is architectural design of buildings, which seeks to reduce the negative environmental impact of buildings, by efficient use of materials and construction methodology to positively impact health and comfort of inhabitants.

Sustainable design works on the principle of trying to preserve largely diminishing resources .A sustainable home will try to exist in harmony with the earths bio capacity instead of eroding it.In a matter of time more than 75 percent of the world population will be living in cities, impacting building construction and reduction in green areas and lung spaces. The need for planting and planning for more green spaces amongst our concrete jungles is becoming very important.

Architects and designers are becoming growingly aware of the need for design of zero emission buildings with emphasis on green architecture.Plants reduce pollution and give out oxygen ,purifying the air, thus creating an environment conducive to health and wellbeing.Architects now see value in inculcating smart irrigation(to reduce wastage of water),solar heating and vegetable roofs in their design.Environment conscious design techniques are making way for new kinds of sustainable architecture.

Rainwater harvesting ,rainwater tanks to preserve and reuse water, recycling waste water to irrigate plants ,are methods builders are using to conserve water as a valuable resource.

Well ventilated and well lit spaces make for comfortabkle living areas for inhabitants.Passive design methods go a long way to ensure sustainability in design, like incorporating a plan which uses orientation of building to effect optimal usage of natural sunlight and air.

Active design methods like solar panels, and home automation ,also help to conserve electricity and make the building sustainable.

Interior designers can attempt to make sustainable interiors ,by using energy efficient material in designing, like wood flooring coming from renewable resources.

Usage of saving toilets, environmentally responsible material for flooring(eg bamboo flooring, marble, granite),use nontoxic non-polluting paint and finishes, planning for energy efficient lighting and ,and opting for LEDs and CFls as they are more energy efficient and last longer are great ways to create a sustainable interior design.

Minimize, reuse, declutter. Use eco-friendly products which can be recycled. Use smart technology and home automation. Use drip irrigation to conserve water to garden your plants, Choose materials which have low energy impact. Socially and ecologically responsible decisions in your design methodology make for sustainable design and Architecture. As designers we have a responsibility to conserve our earth to last for generations to come!!!!Do your bit to save the earth!!!
